Dr. Melba Ketchum: I'm Vindicated!
Now, wait just a minute. We hope Dr. Melba Ketchum is trying to declare victory here. Ketchum seems a little too jubilant these days grabbing onto any favorable news about her failed Bigfoot DNA study. Ketchu claims a French documentary shows that a hair sample she sent in showed "unkown" and that the mtDNA squencing came back as 100% human. We've heard this sort of thing before, and we're a little skeptical at this point. Since this isn't really breaking news and we haven't seen this being reported by mainstream media, we think Ketchum may be celebrating a little too prematurely:

There is a new French Documentary that just came out that used our press conference and website (I didn't participate even though they asked) but what is exciting is that the team from Copenhagen tested purported hair from the Orang Pendek. Their hair analyst said the hair was unknown and then the mtDNA sequencing came back ----wait for it----- 100% HUMAN!!!!! I'm vindicated!!!!!!!

Name of the documentary is "On the Yeti Trail". It's well done without too many errors. It was about science and Christophe Kilian did a great job. Best doc I've seen. World renowned scientist Dr. Tom Gilbert from the University of Copenhagen sequenced the Orang Pendek hairs. He has over 125 peer reviewed publications to his credit. He recently was lead author of the paper where they whole genome sequenced the 12000 year old Native American child (Anzick-1). He is one of the best. Up there with Paabo.

ReplyDeleteWhy does she think she has been vindicated? The mtDNA came back as human, which would seem to indicate that it is a human hair. The fact that the hair came back as unknown does not imply, even remotely, that the hair is not human. There are many reasons why a hair would come back as unknown. The most obvious conclusion would be that the hair was to degraded to be able to do anything more than provide enough of a sample to test the mtDNA. The hair did not come back as unknown because they tested it and were unable to match it up to any known animal. It came back unknown because there was not enough there to run an accurate test. If she actually had a deep understanding of dna she would know this, and, she would know that saying that she is vindicated is only going to make her look more foolish than she already does. She should probably go back to being a Vet, and leave the testing of dna to those who have actually studied it in depth for years.
